What We Know About The Solo Batman Movie So Far

Despite the underwhelming enthusiasm, Batman v Superman was met with by critics and some fans, there is a pretty solid consensus that Ben Affleck was actually a pretty damn good Batman. With Affleck’s success and the tremendous popularity of the character, it was only a matter of time before solo Batman movies were announced (rumors started to trickle in even before the film premiered). However, little is actually known about the Batman solo movie at this point, except for some rumors, speculation and a few tidbits of actual facts. This is what we do know so far though.

It’s The Brainchild Of Ben Affleck And Geoff Johns

After Batman v Superman didn’t get the reception it was hoping for, the studio brought DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns to help develop future movies, which any comic nerd will tell you is a VERY good thing (he's responsible for writing some of the most beloved character arcs in comics). Even better is that it looks like Affleck was collaborating with Johns even before this move was made official.
The best news is that Ben Affleck is apparently being very picky about the script and has been keeping a lot of the details close to his chest.

It’s Going To Be Directed By Affleck

Affleck is actually pulling triple duty on the movie by writing, starring in, and directing the feature. That’s probably why he’s being so cautious with the script since he probably still has a chip on his shoulder from his last superhero outing. Affleck has come a long way since his days in a red leather jumpsuit and by now has proven that he’s a very capable director and actor. Given that the last Batman franchise was directed by Christopher Nolan though, he’s got some big shoes to fill.

The Script Is Going To Be An Original Story

Not much is known officially about the script, but there are plenty of rumors that have picked up steam. He did tell Cines Argentinos:
“I think what I would do is, I would probably do in some ways what Zack [Snyder] did with this movie, which is to borrow certain things from great comic books but create an original story around it. Because I wouldn’t want fans to already know the story and be familiar, but I would borrow and steal great things that have been done before in the comics.”

Deathstroke Will Be One of Many Villains

It was confirmed recently by Geoff Johns that Joe Manganiello will be playing Deathstroke in the film. This comes on the heels of Affleck releasing test footage of the character via social media.
However, other rumors speculate that there will be a ton of Batman villains that will appear in the film. The full extent isn't known, but that’s certainly tied to the rumor that the film will mostly take place in Arkham Asylum, the very place Batman sends all his baddies after they’re caught. Now, superhero movies with tons of villains don’t usually meet a great deal of success, but if these characters have very brief cameos, say passing by their cell, then this could establish that this version of Batman has been doing this for a very long time.

He Will No Longer Be A Killer?

One of the big things that really upset fans about Batman v Supermanis that Batman kinda killed some people (read: a lot of people). However, it’s been rumored that Batman will face the consequences for his actions in Justice League. Assuming that means he’ll adopt a no-kill policy going forward, this would be seen in full force during the solo Batman movie, which would be great since Batman has had a habit of indirectly killing people in pretty much all of his live-action movies.

We’re Only 18 Months Away!?!

Now this is a bit of news that might need to be taken with a grain of salt, but recently Jeff Bewkes (Warner Bros. CEO) stated, “Ben announced a Batman movie [that] he’s going to direct, star, write for — I think it’s a year and a half out. So, the strategy worked.”
This is a lot sooner than expected, since, after Justice League andWonder Woman, Flash is supposed to be the next DC film to hit theaters. I feel as though this might be a bit optimistic on Bewkes part, but the notion that we could have a new Batman movie before 2020 is an exciting thought (at least to Batman fans).
There are a lot of rumors floating around out there in the ether of the internet. It’s clear though that this movie has a chance to potentially be the penultimate Batman movie. So, what do you think? Is this shaping up to be a good Batman movie? Is DC going to redeem itself in the eyes of its fans? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
Batman's next appearance will be in the Justice League movie. No doubt you've seen the trailer, but have you dissected all of the Easter Eggs hidden in it
